This mammoth building opened up for its first prisoners in 1866. The very first execution took place in 1899 with the end total of 85 being hanged and 9 being electrocuted in the "chair". The doors to the prison were officially closed in 1995. The Penitentiary has been named to the National Register of Historic Places and is being utilized for historical and educational tours. Numerous ghost hunts and tours have taken place throughout the years as well. This prison was also featured on MTV's FEAR, the Sci Fi Channels 'Ghosthunters' show, ABC's Worlds Most Scariest Places as well as several other TV programs. We will view some of these videos on our bus trip down.
